22 July, 2008 – The 21st „Internationale Thüringen Rundfahrt“ of the women’s, one of the most important competition series in the women’s cycling kicked off today with the road race „Rund um Schleusingen“. With six of the tenth best UCI women’s cycling Teams were an excellent field on the start.
The today’s race over the distance of 61,6 km was marked with a lot of attacks, as well from the Cervélo-Lifeforce Pro Cycling Team, but at the end no group was able to make it to the finish. In the sprint arrival the German Angela Hennig had the “fastest legs” and claimed victory ahead of Regina Schleicher (GER) and Noemi Cantele (ITA). Sarah Düster (GER) and Priska Doppmann (SUI) finished 5 seconds behind the winning rider.
Karin Thürig took the third place in the overall mountain ranking.
With the second road race “Rund um Gera” over 112,8 km, the “Internationale Thüringen Rundfahrt”, a six day and six stage competition, will continue tomorrow.
